Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is a third wave therapy that considers how individual respond to thoughts and feelings, not necessarily the content. It aims to help us develop self-compassion and reduce shame, self-criticism, and related emotional distress.
When appropriate, I incorporate this into my Cognitive Behavioural Therapy practice in order to promote emotional regulation to reduce distress, resilience to stress through harnessing self-compassion, and improving self-esteem through adjusting any critical inner dialogue we have with ourselves.
By doing this, we are better able to notice, engage with, tolerate and understand our distress, and in doing so take 'wise action' to manage, reduce, relieve and prevent future difficulties.
