Trauma Focused Therapy is a type of therapy that specifically supports people to process traumatic memories and heal from the mental, emotions, and physical aftermath of traumatic events. Usually unprocessed trauma memories lead to symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) including reliving all or part of the traumatic event, feeling on edge and super alert following the traumatic event, and avoiding any reminders of the traumatic event such as people, places or conversations.
I use a Trauma Focused Therapy called 'Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy' (TF-CBT) which is one of the evidence-based therapies recommended for the treatment of PTSD by the UK NICE Clinical Guidelines. This approach involves gradually reclaiming parts of life that were lost as result of the trauma, creating space to process the emotions and cognitions attached to the memory, and using strategies including grounding techniques and stimulus discrimination to lessen the distress caused by trauma-related triggers. The treatment aims to reduce symptoms of PTSD, increase coping skills, and restore a sense of safety.
